Elena Khramova: WHAT IS HIDDEN IN THE DARK?
What Is Hidden in the Dark? is a conceptual photography editorial shaped around nyctophobia, the fear of darkness, and the way that fear persists into adulthood. The conceptual photography project situates anxiety within ordinary domestic interiors, where imagined threat exists alongside routine daily life. By focusing on familiar spaces rather than spectacle, the series examines how fear embeds itself quietly and persistently within the everyday.
The photography uses light sparingly, allowing shadow to obscure rather than fully describe space. Partial visibility becomes a narrative device, reflecting the uncertainty and anticipation associated with fear of the dark. Tension is sustained through proximity, stillness, and absence, with images resisting escalation in favour of psychological pressure that accumulates gradually across the series.
Performance is central to the conceptual editorial. The figures appear as both subjects and creative contributors, lending the work a strong sense of internal coherence. Posture, closeness, and subtle shifts in expression allow unease to surface without overt gesture, keeping the emotional register intimate and grounded. Styling remains embedded within the narrative, reinforcing exposure and self-awareness rather than visual distraction.
A striking visual motif within the conceptual photography series is the presence of a double-headed Sphynx cat. Its elongated form, long claws, and hairless skin introduce an uncanny, almost alien presence that unsettles the domestic setting. The makeup design echoes the Sphynx’s facial structure, emulating its sharp contours and otherworldly features to blur the boundary between human and animal. This mirroring heightens the sense of unease, positioning the cat not as a companion figure but as a manifestation of the unfamiliar within the familiar.
Domestic details further anchor the conceptual photography editorial, particularly through moments of quiet coexistence between human figures and animals. Calm and observant, the cats occupy the same spaces without offering comfort or resolution. Their presence sharpens the contrast between safety and threat, reinforcing the project’s exploration of fear as something that lingers, watches, and waits.
Taken together, What Is Hidden in the Dark? offers a quietly unsettling reflection on how fear of darkness continues to shape emotional experience. The project succeeds through atmosphere, proximity, and psychological clarity, presenting anxiety as something unresolved, intimate, and deeply embedded in daily life.
