Where Shadows Have Teeth: Sergey Scherbelev

An atmospheric fashion photography project examining vulnerability and tension through stark environments, controlled light and disciplined visual composition.

Where Shadows Have Teeth is a psychologically charged fashion photography project that explores vulnerability, tension and restraint through stark architectural spaces and controlled lighting. Photographed by Sergey Scherbelev, the series demonstrates a disciplined approach to composition and atmosphere. Hard, directional light is used with precision, carving form from shadow and emphasising surface detail without drifting into excess. The framing remains deliberate throughout, allowing the environments to carry as much narrative weight as the subject herself.

Model Julia Kobozeva delivers a measured and compelling performance. Her controlled posture and distant gaze reinforce the project’s sense of unease, lending emotional depth without overt dramatics. The relationship between figure and setting feels intentional, heightening the underlying psychological tone of the work.

Makeup and hair by Zlata Golubets play a critical role in establishing visual cohesion. The restrained application and tonal balance enhance the model’s natural features while aligning seamlessly with the project’s muted palette and stark lighting. Nothing feels ornamental or superfluous.

Assistant Mikhail Gruznov supports the production through clear logistical execution, contributing to the consistency and technical control evident across the series. Together, the team delivers a focused editorial that balances narrative ambiguity with strong visual discipline, resulting in a body of work that is both unsettling and refined.
