Don’t Tell Nanna: Natasha Björnsson-
Don’t Tell Nanna is a cohesive digital illustration project by graphic artist Natasha Björnsson-Merrick that presents a psychologically charged exploration of identity, distortion and internal conflict. Created in 2018, the series demonstrates a confident command of line, composition and symbolic intent, positioning the work firmly within contemporary surreal illustration.
The featured works Pretty Dead, Cocaine Psychosis, Conflict of Mind and Poser each contribute to a unified visual language defined by exaggerated facial forms, anatomical fragmentation and recurring ocular motifs. These elements function less as shock devices and more as vehicles for introspection, suggesting fractured perception and emotional instability without reliance on explicit narrative.
Björnsson-Merrick’s line work is precise and expressive, with controlled variation in weight creating depth and rhythm across each composition. The restrained use of colour accents against predominantly monochrome drawings heightens visual tension while preserving clarity and cohesion. Digital textures are applied sparingly, reinforcing the illustrative discipline rather than obscuring it.
Across the series, the artist demonstrates a mature understanding of digital illustration as both a technical practice and a conceptual tool. Don’t Tell Nanna reads as an intentional and resolved body of work, suitable for editorial presentation and gallery exhibition, and reflective of a distinct and recognisable artistic voice.
