Peasant Metal: Netherwild’s Cinematic Critique of Wealth Inequality

NETHERWILDS, the new project fronted by Worm Chewer, arrives with "Return The Goat", a theatrical first glimpse into an ambitious fantasy universe where extreme metal, medieval folk traditions and satirical storytelling collide.

For anyone unfamiliar with the character, Worm Chewer has become something of a cult icon across Tiktok. Rather than treating the joke as a one-off Tiktok micro-trend, NETHERWILDS expands that universe into something far more immersive.

Directed by Noah Douglas and Jake Thompson, the accompanying video follows Worm Chewer and a ragtag fellowship on a mission to recover a missing goat. Predictably, what begins as a simple quest quickly spirals into a much larger adventure populated by kings, mystics, executioners and revolutionaries. Equal parts fantasy film and tongue-in-cheek medieval theatre, the visuals establish the foundations of a world that feels surprisingly lived-in beneath the layers of mud and chainmail.

Beneath the exaggerated medieval language and deliberately grimy aesthetic sits a story exploring power, inequality, survival and rebellion. While its setting belongs firmly in fantasy, many of its themes feel unmistakably contemporary.

Speaking about the project, Worm Chewer explains:

"Though mine goat hath vanished, I hath gained a fellowship of minstrels. Together we roam the kingdom performing our peasant metal in search of the goat, glory, and slightly improved living conditions.

The moving visions within this tapestry mark the start of our legend together and thou art hereby invited to become a part of it. Verily, the next time your lord is distracted by counting his coins, take up thine orb and ponder upon our quest. There are dark and strange times ahead and we shall require every peasant, serf and village fool we can muster."

"Return The Goat" serves as the opening chapter of NETHERWILDS' forthcoming debut album, scheduled for release later this autumn via King Volume Records. If this introduction is anything to go by, the project is less interested in releasing isolated singles than it is constructing an entire mythology, with future instalments set to gradually reveal more of the kingdom and its inhabitants.

In an era where viral fame often proves fleeting, NETHERWILDS feels refreshingly committed to the bit. What began as a medieval peasant making people laugh on TikTok has evolved into an expansive fantasy narrative with sharp class critical analysis behind its humour.
