THE BECOMING BY HUW LLOYD

The Becoming is a conceptual portrait series exploring transformation, ritual and the gradual erosion of identity.

The story begins with a figure presented in white, crowned with flowers and held within a space that feels almost ceremonial. As the sequence develops, mirrors, veils, blackened hands, projected shadows and increasingly distorted body language begin to disrupt that sense of purity. What first appears delicate and controlled becomes darker, more unstable and more psychologically charged.

Rather than depicting a witch as a fixed archetype, the series focuses on the act of becoming one. The transformation is physical, emotional and symbolic: the character moves from innocence and ritual into contamination, possession, rupture and, finally, rebirth.

The intention was to create a visual narrative that sits between dark fashion, folk horror and fine-art portraiture, using contrast, gesture, obscured identity and shadow to suggest a change that is never fully explained.

The final images are not about destruction but emergence. The figure at the end of the series is no longer the person we were introduced to at the beginning.
